This page contains a list of concepts and unused assets that aren't seen in the release versions of Castle Crashers.

Unused Assets[]

Weapons[]

Weapons take up the bulk of all the unused content. All of them appear to be beta versions of weapons that were changed before the game's release.

The Playdo Pasta Maker has its holes centered in the middle of the blade, as well as having more of them.

The Staff is a lot straighter in the final version, and the shading is more complicated.
Spoon comparison
The Wooden Spoon was noticeably made of gold instead of wood, and the resolution is WAY lower in the beta version.

Unused Items[]

These are items that exist in the game's files, but are only able to obtained through modding or glitches. When selected, they are shown beside the player icon, taking up the same slot as items such as Health Potions and the Bow and Arrow.

Scrapped Characters[]

Playable Characters[]

The only known scrapped playable characters, as stated by the developer of the game, Dan Paladin, are as follows:

  • Troll: A playable Troll was planned for addition, but did not make it to production stages.[1]
  • Princesses: Playable versions of the Princesses were planned to be added, but also did not make it to production stages.[1][2] In Dan Paladin's words, "There are 250+ animations and we ran out of time".[3]

Barbarian Boss[]

The Barbarian Boss was originally a Beefy Barbarian with unique properties. Codes relevant to this unused boss still exist within the game's files, and screenshots dating back to 2006 of the boss fight have been archived from early versions of the official Castle Crashers website.[4]

Tiger Boss[]

An image of what seems to be an unused tiger enemy can be found on the front page of earlier versions of the Behemoth's official website. According to Dan Paladin, this character was used for a pitch document.[6]

Later on, the developers had plans for a boss which was a giant tiger arm that came out of a well. It was to be battled before the Ice Castle[7], and it would've had fake princess finger puppets on its claws to lure the players in. Due to time constraints, this boss concept never came to fruition.[8]

Player Death Animation Concept[]

An unused concept of a player character's flesh bursting off the skeleton upon death. It was scrapped in favor of the CPR mechanic.[9]

Scrapped Scenes[]

Impaled Orange Princess[]

Tom Fulp revealed that, originally, an impaled painting of the Orange Princess would fall from the rising castle in Wizard Castle Takeoff. This would cause the knights to fly up into the air out of rage, only to arrive at the castle and see the real princess in the hands of the Painter. Although this scene did not make it into the final product, several paintings of the Orange Princess with a knife in her back can be seen in Painter's Room.[10]

Bear Castle[]

In an interview, Dan Paladin mentioned an unused scene where the Bears fought against Industrialists, who were chopping down the trees in their region. The ongoing battle would result in piles of dead Bears, and the player would walk past the corpses right into the Bears' castle and fight the Bears in it. This scene never made it into the game, although it had already been drawn. [11]

Old Home Castle Intro[]

An early version of the intro to the Home Castle level.[12] On top of the event playing out somewhat differently from that in the release version, the King's stolen crystal used to be an orb, and the Evil Wizard had a different color scheme.

The Behemoth's Next Game (Castle Crashers Prototype)[]

Main article: The Behemoth's Next Game

The Behemoth's Next Game was a prototype of Castle Crashers, first shown at Comic Con 2005. It was also known under the name of Ye Olde Side-Scroller[13]. It ran on the GameCube as the game was originally meant for a GameCube release. Notably, the designs of the protagonists had much different proportions from those in Castle Crashers, and it featured enemies not seen in the final game.
